November marks Native American Heritage Month, which provides Indigenous peoples with a platform to share their culture and traditions. SDSU commemorates the month with a series of events to help students, faculty, staff and visitors honor and celebrate Native culture.
Coinciding with Native American Heritage Month, the Southern California Warrior Spirit Family and SDSU are hosting “Native Truth & Healing: California Genocide Conference.” The four-day conference runs from Nov. 21-24 and will include presentations, music, documentary films and political action sessions to offer attendees a chance to learn about the California genocide and Indigenous peoples’ history. In what has become somewhat of a tradition, the SDSU men’s basketball team will wear turquoise Nike N7 uniforms (turquoise is symbolic of harmony and friendship in Native American culture) during its Nov. 25 game against Tennessee State. The uniforms, pregame recognition and a half-time performance will honor Native American communities and culture.
The inaugural RE: BORDER Binational Conference on Nov. 25-26 will analyze the use of water resources in the transborder region of California and Baja California. Academic experts, practitioners, public policy experts, community stakeholders – and students – will explore how SDSU and its regional partners can contribute to innovative solutions for water-related challenges in the transborder region. There will be presentations, conversations, poster sessions and artistic experiences. The conference’s first day will take place at SDSU, with the final day being held at UABC in Tijuana.

Giving Thanks Dinner
Feeling grateful for your campus family? Get together with other students for the fifth annual Giving Thanks Dinner from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. on Nov. 21. Share a meal, write a holiday card to those in military service and showcase your hidden talents in an Open Mic competition for cash gift cards. The evening, organized by the Aztec Student Union Board Aztec Pride Committee, takes place at the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union. Sign up for the Open Mic at the link below. You must be a current SDSU student with a valid RedID to attend. One guest 18+ allowed per student.
Registration is now open for the 2020 SDSU Leadership Summit – the premier student leadership conference on the West Coast. The daylong series of sessions and workshops on Feb. 15 is organized by the Division of Student Affairs and the Office of Student Life & Leadership. Check the Leadership Summit link below for updates on the schedule and roster of presenters and fill out this form to be added to the email list for conference and registration updates. Cost is $30 plus processing fee for SDSU students.
Are you an undergraduate or graduate student with a research, scholarship or creative activity that deserves recognition? Register for the Feb. 28-29 Student Research Symposium. SRS is a two-day forum at which SDSU students present to the public, and winners are eligible for cash prizes. Nearly 500 students presented at last year’s symposium, and 60 received cash awards. Ten received $500 Presidential Awards and went on to represent SDSU at the CSU Student Research Competition. Registration closes Jan. 20.
Finals Week Activities
Stressed out over finals? No? Better add Dec. 12-18 to your calendar. … Don’t worry, though, there are a number of events to help ease the tension.
Need a quieter place to study? The Love Library will be open 24/7 from midnight on Dec. 8 through Dec. 17.
Dec. 3 (11 a.m. - 2 p.m.): Come play with Baxter the therapy dog at the “Relax With Bax” event organized by Counseling and Psychological Services.
Dec. 4 (11 a.m. - 2 p.m.): Pay homage to the ’80s at the Throwback Finals Destress in the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union. Current students with a valid RedID card can enjoy arcade games, pizza, mini corn dogs and milkshakes.
Dec. 5 (5 p.m. to 7 p.m.): Take a break from cramming to catch Aztec Rock - Battle of the Bands in Montezuma Hall. The winner will open for a big name at the GreenFest concert at Cal Coast Open Air Theatre in the spring.
Dec. 13 (6 p.m. to midnight): The International Student Center is hosting a late-night finals break on Dec. 13. Finals Frenzy gives international students a chance to decompress and socialize from 6 p.m. to midnight.

World AIDS Day is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show support for people living with HIV and to commemorate those who have died. Come to the Department of Well-being and Health Promotion’s table on Campanile Walkway from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 29 to learn more about HIV and AIDS and to show your support for those living with or affected by HIV.

Did you miss the last Aztec CORE Leadership Retreat? The January Aztec CORE application is open until 4 p.m. Nov. 21. Pack up your sleeping bag and bring a jacket for the free three-day off-campus leadership retreat, which is intended for emerging and advanced leaders who are interested in further developing their leadership skills.
