Many students not only bring diverse backgrounds to SDSU, but also take part in unique experiences across campus that forever change their lives. Senior Andrea Byrd brings both to the table in her definition of the Aztec Experience. With experiences with the Harambee Scholars Mentoring Program, KCR College Radio and Afrikan Student Union in addition to Associated Students, there is no doubt Andrea has found her niche on campus — or that this Aztec’s diverse experiences will serve her well in the future.
Getting ahead in your coursework and staying connected to your professors and the campus are some of the benefits of taking courses during Summer Session. This summer, SDSU is offering hundreds of on-campus courses and more than 130 online courses in three short sessions. Taking just one summer session course can put you on track to graduate on time or leave room in your schedule to participate in a valuable internship or study abroad program. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo
Enjoy a day of music and culture on May 5 as One SDSU Community celebrates Cinco de Mayo on campus and at Balboa Park. The event — organized in collaboration with the SDSU School of Music and Dance, the San Diego Kiwanis Club and Foundation and the Mexican Consulate — will begin with a student performance at 4 pm at the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union flagpole. Attendees will then receive free transportation to Balboa Park for the San Diego Kiwanis Club and Foundation’s annual Concierto Cinco de Mayo. The concert, beginning at 6 pm at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion, features performances by Jarabe Mexicano and the SDSU Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble and Color Guard. Students will receive a free Pepsi backpack as well as an MTS bus pass for free transit between event sites.
It’s time for a Midnight Study Break
Hitting a wall? Re-energize with free breakfast, games and giveaways at the Midnight Study Break in Montezuma Hall on Thursday, May 5 from 10 pm to 1 am. The Commuter Resource Center follows suit May 6 – 7 with a Study Zone with coffee and study tips, so make it a point to stop by. Also, don’t forget to come back to the Commuter Resource Center May 9 - 12 for the free candy wall!
Now for those of you writing final papers, did you know that the Writing Center in Love Library offers free feedback on your work? See the Writing Center’s hours here. Tutoring is also available in the library’s Math Learning Center and is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
Stay active this summer
If you’re attending classes or just staying in San Diego this summer, there are still plenty of fitness options available. The Aztec Recreation Center (ARC) will offer its regular Group Fitness classes and remain open 24 hours on most days, with the exception of Friday and Saturday nights when it closes at 10 pm and reopens at 8 am. Summer hours (open 8 am to 7 pm daily) at the Aztec Aquaplex begin May 31. Summer hours at the SDSU Tennis Courts (open 4-8 pm Monday through Thursday and 12-4 pm Saturday and Sunday) go into effect on May 16. You can also compete in intramural sports, with registration for teams and free agents beginning in late June.
Graduating seniors who have not yet picked up their allotment of 2016 Commencement tickets must do so by 4 pm on Friday, May 6 at the Viejas Arena box office. All students will be required to show SDSU RedID or valid, government-issued ID. Students unable to make it to the box office can have a friend or relative pick up tickets by submitting a Proxy Ticket Request Form no fewer than 24 hours prior to pick up. Any tickets unclaimed by May 6 will be made available to any student with a valid SDSU RedID beginning on Monday, May 9. Learn more about Commencement ticket distribution
