WebPortal Gets a Makeover

In 2003, Apple was making history with the launch of iTunes, camera phones were the latest craze, and a social media revolution was underway with the introduction of MySpace. It was a big year, and San Diego State University was rolling out its own technological breakthrough: WebPortal.

A lot has changed since then, and in a decade characterized by technological evolution in which websites have either drastically changed or disappeared completely, WebPortal has remained basically the same. Until now.

SDSU launched its redesign of WebPortal last week to create a more appealing, user-friendly and intuitive platform. The overhaul includes changes to the look and feel of the site, as well as improved functionality features such as password unlocking and retrieval.

Prior to the changes, students, faculty and staff who forgot their WebPortal password were directed to call the Registrar’s Office to have it reset. Now, users can retrieve or reset forgotten passwords in real time on the site. The addition of challenge questions and automatic email notifications for adjusted settings also makes for a more secure user experience.

WebPortal’s new look and expanded capabilities are the result of an initiative by Enrollment Services to increase accessibility and efficiency for students who use WebPortal prior to, during and even after enrollment at SDSU.

“This is something we’ve been working toward for a long time, so it’s very exciting to finally launch the new site,” said Tony Chung, director of technology services in the Division of Student Affairs. “There’s still a lot of work to be done, but we’re excited to be moving forward and opening the door to new possibilities, opportunities and partnerships across campus.”

Although the recent changes are limited to the website’s public pages, the redesign is the first step in a more comprehensive, long-term project.

The improvements to WebPortal will eventually have a positive ripple effect on other sites frequently used by students thanks to ongoing collaboration between Enrollment Services and the Division of Student Affairs.

“With the WebPortal redesign, the stage has been set for future enhancements that will benefit students by improving their experience as they navigate through the myriad of online services on campus,” said Sandra Cook, associate vice president for enrollment management.
