As the end of the semester approaches, Aztecs can breathe and reboot with free breakfast and giveaways at Midnight Study Break in Montezuma Hall on May 7 from 9 pm until midnight. The Commuter Resource Center will also set up a Study Zone (and free candy wall!) for students during finals week May 7 to 14. Free treats and study tips are sure to replenish hungry minds.
For students putting the final touches on papers, the SDSU Writing Center gives you a chance to receive feedback on your work from an experienced writer. Tutoring is also available for math, calculus and statistics in the Love Library and provided on a first-come, first-served basis by graduate teaching assistants from the Mathematics & Statistics Department.
Be Sun Smart This Summer
The sun shines year-round here in sunny San Diego, but excessive sun exposure can increase your risk of skin cancer. May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and health experts agree college students are more at risk for skin cancers like melanoma than any other age group. It’s a good idea to get checked out by a dermatologist at least once a year, but here are some skincare tips from SDSU Health Promotion if you plan to spend lots of time outside this summer:
The greatest sun damage occurs between 10 am and 2 pm when the sun is the strongest. Seek shade to limit your direct exposure to the sun.
Before heading outside, protect your face, head, ears and neck by throwing on a hat, sunblock and UV-protected sunglasses, even on cloudy days.
The higher the SPF, the greater your protection from the sun. Always reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially after sweating or being in the water.
Graduating? Got Your Tickets?
With graduation just weeks away, time is running out to pick up your tickets to Commencement. Graduating SDSU students can pick up free guest tickets at the Viejas Arena Ticket Office through May 8. If graduating students are unable to pick up their tickets from the university, they can fill out a proxy authorization form and follow the instructions in order to have a relative pick up the tickets until May 8. Starting May 11, any remaining tickets will be distributed to students with a valid Red ID card on a first-come, first-served basis. Learn a Language in Five Weeks
SDSU’s Language Acquisition Resource Center is offering Intensive Critical Language Courses, an amazing way to complete a full year of foreign-language studies in five weeks. From late May to mid August, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in Arabic, Persian, or Russian — some of today’s most critical languages. Whether you need to complete a foreign language requirement or simply want to add a great skill to your resume, the Intensive Critical Language Courses might be for you. Earn between four and 20 units of foreign language credit this summer in classes that meet for four to six hours of interactive instruction daily. Best of the Best Film Student Showcase
This spring’s best and brightest will be out in full force on May 13 at the SDSU “Best of the Best Film Showcase,” beginning at 7:30 pm at the Don Powell Theatre. The event will feature select short films from students in the School of Theatre, Television and Film. Faculty members determine the “best of the best” projects and reveal the winning films that evening. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online.
A Taste of Italy on Campus
The International Coffee Hours at the International Student Center provide a symbolic and literal taste of the world to students from all over the globe once a week during the semester. Join the party this Friday (May 1) at noon for the last installment before the summer and let your mind and senses travel to Italy! International students from the land of pizza and pasta, of Rome and Venice, of opera and calico, will host an our of cultural exchange and tasty treats. Don’t miss out on this highlight event, organized by the International Student Association. It will never be easier (or cheaper) to get an authentic impression of “Bella Italia!”
5-1-1 to the Roadside Rescue
Stressed and stranded on the freeway? Students commuting to school this summer can rest assured knowing they are in the service area of the Freeway Service Patrol’s 5-1-1 motorist aid program. Seven days a week, a fleet of trucks provide free roadside assistance to drivers on the major freeways around San Diego and can help get you back on the road safely during peak commute hours.
The trucks can help with a gallon of gas, a jump-start, water for the radiator, or changing a flat tire. Stranded drivers on the freeway can call 5-1-1 and say “Roadside Assistance” or use a yellow highway call box to get help.
