Eric Anderberg Has Sights Set on Great Career
AS Exec Has Employment Landed Before Graduating
Associated Students (AS) Vice President of Finance Eric Anderberg has been proactive during his senior year in lining up a great career upon graduation. Thanks to his involvement with both the College of Business and with SDSU’s Career Services, he’s off to a great start before the ink on his diploma is dry.
Eric, who is graduating this month with a degree in Finance, said working with staff on campus was key in landing his new position with Federated Insurance, a prestigious company that provides insurance to small- and medium-sized businesses, as well as life insurance plans. He begins a 9-month training program on June 17 in Minnesota.
“My initial interaction with Federated came about when Dean Cunninghman (in the College of Business) handed me a card from them and suggested I contact them,” said Eric. “This was last October, and it has been a 5-month process between phone interviews, ride-alongs, a 6-hour, in-person interview and ten reference checks.”
Eric explained that the company invests in its employees so it wants to make sure that the fit is right. They have an extremely low turnover rate and a stellar reputation.
In addition to Dean Cunningham, Eric said working with Career Services staff was instrumental in making his dream job a reality.
“Sandra Williams and Dr. James Tarbox were both there for me on so many levels,” he said. “Sandi helped me with my resume and they both helped me through many steps in the process. Chris in their office conducted a tough mock interview. He was familiar with the company so he provided me with some hard questions, which prepared me for the real thing. It really helped me overcome the jitters when the I had the actual interview in Orange County.”
After the training program, Eric, who is a San Jose native, hopes to come back to Southern California for his actual employment.
“I’m actually open to anywhere, but I have a place in my heart for Southern California after spending my college years at SDSU,” he said. “I’m excited about getting out in the field and working with business owners. This feels like a great fit for me.”
Between his graduation on May 18 and his training in June, Eric will be taking a well-deserved post-commencement trip to Europe with a group of friends.
