Spring Cleaning Tips for A Healthy State of Mind

Spring is upon us, and along with venturing into the shadowy depths of your closet, trunk and fridge for a deep cleaning, it’s also a great time to take inventory of your mental health and wellbeing. San Diego State University offers programs and services to help you stay grounded in the midst of typical stressors like midterms and deadlines, as well as guidance through difficult issues such as grief, loss and conflict resolution. Find the resource that’s right for you, whether you thrive in a group setting or just need some alone time.
Counseling and Psychological Services Groups & Workshops
The Counseling and Psychological Services Department offers both individual and group counseling services. Both are beneficial, but when it comes to developing communication skills, getting social support and feedback, or understanding relationship patterns, group workshops and therapy sessions take the cake. Also, if you notice a red Counseling and Psychological Services tent around campus, go take a closer look, there might just be an assortment of adorable puppies eager to relieve your stress with a play and snuggle session.
Center for Community Counseling & Engagement
SDSU also offers off-campus support through the Center for Community Counseling and Engagement. Located in City Heights, the non-profit center offers low-cost counseling services from graduate students in SDSU’s Department of Counseling and School Psychology. These graduate students are accompanied by licensed therapists, psychologists, supervisors accredited by the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and/or members of SDSU's Counseling and School Psychology faculty. This semester the center announced new group counseling offerings including support groups for grief, bereavement and loss, and a Spanish-speaking group specifically designed for Latina women. Visit their website to learn more about taking part in the group or individual counseling sessions.
Mind, Body and Spirit Center
Do you feel like you “just need to get away from it all,” but you have a study group in half an hour? If this sounds like a big—and stressful—dilemma, then you probably haven’t heard about the Mind, Body and Spirit Center. Located in the Center for Intercultural Relations on the second floor of the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union, the room offers a relaxing space for students to stretch, connect and grow through mind/body activities, worship, meditation and reflection. Students are invited to drop in for a pick-me-up Mondays through Thursdays from 8 am to 7 pm and Fridays from 8 am to 4:30 pm.
