March 2013 - Aztec Student Union Update
Aztec Student Union Update
Even to the untrained eye, construction on Aztec Student Union is going quickly. In January and February, crew members were busy at work. They erected scaffolding inside and outside the union and began exterior and interior framing. Sheets of purple drywall — safe for exposure — were also erected in and around the building. To make sure the rest of the build-out process goes smoothly, crew members built a large model to practice installation of materials.
Frames for ornamental rooftops are currently prominent across the building’s roof. The beams will hold tiled roofs reminiscent of those seen atop Hepner Hall and Hardy Tower. Other features, such as built-in seating for the café/dining areas, were also installed on the first floor of Aztec Student Union.
Crew members also installed decorative wood trusses in the 300-seat theater and in an event space. The trusses are visible from College Avenue. The wood used in the trusses is from Forest Service Council-certified sustainably managed forests.
