Joseph Wasswa cleared a lot of hurdles to get to where he is today. The native of Uganda arrived at SDSU last year and immediately faced feelings of culture shock and isolation, and had no idea of how he’d be able to make ends meet. But he did have something that carried him through the uncertainty – a desire to provide clean drinking water for people back in his home country. An environmental engineering graduate student, Joseph has settled into life as an Aztec and he’s involved in cutting-edge research on water purification methods.
Voting opens for Associated Students’ Executive Officers general election March 14 at 8 am and runs through March 17 at 7 pm. This is your opportunity to make your voice heard, so make sure to log in to WebPortal and click on A.S. Elections to cast your vote. Visit the Associated Students’ website to learn more about each candidate’s plans for 2016-17. Also, attend the candidate debates on March 8 and 9 at noon in the Aztec Student Union Courtyard, to hear more about their stances on the important issues facing A.S. and SDSU. You are also invited to hear the results of the elections, which will be announced on March 17 at 7:30 pm in Montezuma Hall.
Step into success: Career Fair on March 17
Are you interested in a career in the nonprofit, government or education fields? On March 17, Career Services will host a Nonprofit, Government and Education Career Fair in Montezuma Hall from 10 am to 2:30 pm. Whether you’re interested in starting your own nonprofit organization or leading the city as mayor, you can explore what these career paths look like, even if you’re not graduating yet. Making connections with employers early at career fairs and through internships can improve your job prospects after graduation, so start flexing those networking skills now.
Open an important ‘Dialogue’
Ever wondered what it’s like to be immersed in another culture? Curious how hard it is to bridge differences? Explore these topics at a special tea ceremony and screening of “The Dialogue,” from 5 to 7 pm on March 8 in the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union Theater. Presented by One SDSU Community, in conjunction with The Confucius Institute. “The Dialogue” is a documentary following four American students and four Chinese students as they travel together across China.
Following the screening, take part in a discussion led by SDSU Study Abroad’s Ine Williams, who has lived in China.
Everything you need for graduation
Commencement is just around the corner, and SDSU Gradfest will serve as your one-stop shop for all things graduation. At Gradfest, held March 22-24 from 9:30 am to 7 pm in Montezuma Hall, vendors will be on campus to assist graduating students with purchasing Commencement regalia. Commencement tickets will also be available for pickup at Gradfest with a valid student Red ID card.
Also, don’t forget to mark your calendars for GradNite, a special grads-only event at the SDSU Bookstore on April 21 from 5 to 7 pm. Special offers, games, prizes and free food will be available to those attending, so grab your free ticket to GradNite during GradFest.
You can still study abroad
Good news for anyone who missed the deadline: You may still have a chance to pack your bags and embark on a fall 2016 or academic year 2016-17 study abroad program! Several programs still have availability and are accepting late applicants – but spots are going fast. Attend a Study Abroad Information Session and see an advisor to find out which programs are still available.
Meanwhile, there is also time to apply for your dream summer abroad! Search for programs in the Aztecs Abroad database and apply by March 15.
Make Spring Break matter
Break away from the old Spring Break routine and check out your options at the Safe Spring Break event on March 24 from 11 am to 2 pm on Campanile Walkway. Sponsored by SDSU’s Health Promotion Department, Safe Spring Break offers tips on staying safe and healthy during SDSU’s spring break: March 28 to April 1. Be smart and know the consequences of less healthy choices facing many spring breakers, and explore how you can still have a fun, healthy spring break that can help you feel refreshed and recharged when you come back.
Support the Aztecs all spring
Spring sports are in full swing, and you can support several Aztecs programs throughout March. Come out to a ballgame at Tony Gwynn Stadium March 10-12 as SDSU plays four games in three days against Big Ten foe Northwestern. If you’d rather spend the weekend by the pool, don’t miss Aztecs women’s water polo taking on Harvard, Princeton, Indiana and Bucknell at the Aztec Invitational, March 11 and 12 at the Aztec Aquaplex.
