SDSU Ambassadors Kicks Off Recruiting Season

It was a Thursday afternoon the first time Caitlyn Vrsalovich took a tour of the San Diego State University campus. She knew quickly that SDSU was the right school for her, but had no idea that she would later become one of the utmost student experts about that same campus that seemed so huge and foreign to her that day.

After spending the past three years as an SDSU Ambassador, Vrsalovich has dedicated her time as an Aztec to making an impact on new and prospective SDSU students as they begin their college experience. From interesting campus tours to insightful academic advising, students’ formal introductions to campus are getting better by the day thanks to students like Vrsalovich.

This month, the Office of New Student and Parent Programs will kick off the search for another group of SDSU Ambassadors. Ambassadors are SDSU’s official student representatives and often the first friendly faces visitors meet when they step foot on Montezuma Mesa for the first time.

Immeasurable Impact

They are the group of students in red polos who make walking around campus backwards look easy and help pull off New Student Orientation without a hitch. But according to Vrsalovich, being an SDSU Ambassador is more than just pointing out buildings and sharing the secret of former SDSU President Black’s lucky foot.

“At orientation, we have students coming up to ambassadors and saying ‘you were my tour guide’ and ‘you are the reason I came to SDSU,’ and it’s amazing to feel the impact you made on that person,” she said.

In fact, being enthusiastic about helping others is a top requirement for becoming an SDSU Ambassador. Aztec pride, a strong work ethic, unwavering commitment to community service and honed time management skills are key to landing the volunteer position.

With a 3-hour per week minimum time commitment and two full semesters of training, Vrsalovich said being an SDSU Ambassador is a lot of work, but well worth the payoff.

The Next Step

Students interested in learning more and applying are encouraged to attend one of four information sessions held in February.

Applications are available in the Office of New Student and Parent Programs and on its website beginning January 22 and are due by 4 pm on Monday, February 17.
