Get Ready for Future Forward February
by Dr. Randy Timm, the Dean of Students

I use a metaphor in my courses called “Ready, Aim, Fire.” This comes to mind when I think about the month of February and the importance of engaging in leadership and service opportunities — especially during this time.
The fall semester is about getting “ready” - getting acclimated to campus and your courses, joining or starting student organizations/groups on campus, and really just getting settled and finding your home.
But the spring semester, specifically the month of February, represents the “aim.” It is the time to find your passion and purpose, engage deeper in meaningful experiences and get yourself prepared and polished professionally.
To help you focus on your “aim” and invest time doing what you are passionate about and to help you find your purpose, my team is collaborating with Career Services and other campus partners to launch “Future Forward February.”
We will kick off “Future Forward February” with the JC Penny Suit Up Event. Get your professional wardrobe ready at during this event, which is just for SDSU students (with up to 40 percent off professional attire!) on Jan. 28, 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the JCPenney Store located at Fashion Valley Mall.
Take advantage of career resources, such as the Feb. 10 Diversity Career Forum and the Feb. 14-15 Spring Career and Internship Fair. Take the time to give back to others and nourish your soul by participating in the SDSU Dance Marathon. Also, polish your leadership skills at the Feb. 17 SDSU Leadership Summit conference, to be held at the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union, where the topic of failure and success, and tips on how to deal with both, will be discussed in depth.
More details on “Future Forward February” events will soon be available via the Career Services site.
The “fire” takes place when you apply for interviews, internships, mentorships, student leadership roles, graduate school, and/or employment. “Fire” is the action… it means putting all the pieces together to showcase your best self.
So, I hope you are ready, it’s time to aim. February has been designed with leadership and service opportunities to assist you in engaging deeper and to reflect on your best future.
