A few other things to know about marijuana since it was legalized this year in California:
State vs. federal law. In November, 2016, California passed Proposition 64. This law allows adults 21 and over to legally buy, possess, and grow marijuana for recreational use. However, SDSU, like all colleges and universities, is held to two federal laws: the Drug-Free Schools and Community Act and the Drug-Free Workplace Act. Since marijuana is still illegal under federal law, it remains an illegal substance to possess, sell or use on campus.
Medical marijuana on campus. The Drug-Free Schools and Community Act and the Drug-Free Workplace Act do not distinguish medical and non-medical use. So SDSU, like all colleges and universities, prohibits any marijuana use, regardless of medical status.
Marijuana and safety. While legal, marijuana is still a drug eliciting different effects for every individual. Legalization does not necessarily mean safety; long-term and short-term effects to the body and the brain are still possible. As a student, you should inform yourself about of all the possibilities and outcomes related to marijuana use.
Use among students. Nationwide, students tend to overestimate the marijuana use of their peers. The American College Health Association reported in its 2017 National College Health Assessment that students incorrectly guessed that 8.5 percent of their peers had never used marijuana -59.1 percent of reported that they had never used marijuana before. At SDSU, 54.6 percent of students have never used marijuana.
