Creating awareness and empowering the Trans* communities are just some of the goals of April’s Transgender Week of Empowerment, April 7 through 11.
Across campus, a large number of student groups and other SDSU organizations are joining together to coordinate a series of visible events for campus to highlight the transgender communities that can often be misunderstood or overlooked.
“The Trans* Week of Empowerment is about empowering people, particularly people who identify with one of the trans communities, to feel embraced and understood by our campus community and the community at large,” said Anthony Keen, coordinator of The Pride Center.
Keen said the week of events, which follows the actual Transgender Day of Empowerment on April 4, has been a truly collaborative effort by organizations across campus – Safe Zones @ SDSU, the Queer People of Color Collective, the Queer Student Union, The Andrea O'Donnell Womyn's Outreach Association, The Pride Center, Delta Lambda Phi Fraternity, and Gamma Rho Lambda Sorority.
The week of events will kick off with the raising of the Trans* communities flag at the Hepner Hall flag pole at noon on Monday, Apr. 7. Another daily event during the week will be the Trans* 101 lecture, a talk designed to give attendees a more educated look into the Trans* communities.
On Friday, Apr. 11, supporters and members of the Trans* communities will participate in a candlelight vigil and a day of silence to bring about awareness of ways in which these communities are overlooked or silenced by the public.
