Subject Matter Competency

 Multiple subject candidates must pass all 3 Multiple subject subtests (see chart below)

Single Subject candidates may meet this requirement by taking CSET as described below or through a waiver program (from your undergraduate major).

  • Go to www.cset.nesinc.com for test dates, online registration, and more
  • All subtest indicated below must be passed to be eligible to start a 2 semester program.
  • Non-passing scores may be considered for eligibility for the Three Semester program
  • Subject Matter Competency Test scores are considered valid for five years.  Teacher certification must be recommended within that time period in order for the scores to be permanent.
  • If you do not obtain a recommendation for your teaching credential within five years, you must retake the appropriate subject matter competency test.
  • All CSET subtests must be passed prior to student teaching.
  • Exams may be in progress when applying to the program.Passing scores must be submitted by the first week in May to be eligible for Fall admission.
  • SDSU is currently not admitting credential program candidates in Art Education, Physical Education or Music Education unless they have completed the following:

A California approved subject matter waiver Bachelor’s degree program in Art Education, Physical Education or Music Education, and two instructional methods courses in the content area (e.g. Teaching Methods in Music) with attached or included K-12 practica. For more information, contact:
