Gilman International Scholarship Program

Gilman International Scholarship logoThe U.S. Department of State's goal for the Gilman International Scholarship Program is to broaden the student population that studies and interns abroad by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints.

About Gilman scholarship awards

  • Award approximately 2,800 scholarships each academic year
  • Each award up to $5,000

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be eligible for or currently receive a Federal Pell Grant
  • Be studying or interning abroad for a minimum of 3 weeks (21 days) in one country
  • Be a U.S. Citizen

Preference Factors

The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to support a diverse range of students who have been traditionally under-represented in education abroad, including but not limited to:

  • Students from diverse ethnic backgrounds
  • Students with high financial need
  • Traveling to non-traditional destinations (especially outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand)
  • Underrepresented fields of study, including STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math)
  • Students with disabilities
  • Studying critical need languages
  • Longer length of study abroad

The Gilman International Scholarship Application is available online.

There are 4 main components to the application process:

  1. Online student application
  2. Online study abroad advisor certification
    (Contact SDSU Study Abroad office if unsure who to select)
  3. Financial aid advisor certification
  4. Upload unofficial transcripts
