Critical Need Languages

Scholarships are available for students learning critical-need or non-Western European languages.

  • Critical-need languages are those considered important to maintaining U.S. national security
  • Speakers of these languages are highly sought after by U.S. government, defense and intelligence sectors, private and non-profit organizations
  • Students often not required to have previous study in the selected language

Languages considered "critical need" include:

  • Arabic (all dialects)
  • Chinese (all dialects)
  • Indonesian
  • Indic (Bangla, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu)
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Persian (Farsi, Dari, Kurdish, Pashto, Tajiki)
  • Russian
  • Swahili
  • Turkic (Azerbaijani, Kazakh, Turkish, Uzbek)
  • ...and many others!

  • Focused on foreign languages critical to U.S. national security
  • Preference given to programs over 6 months such as academic year abroad
  • Federal service requirement upon graduation such as State Department, Defense Sector, Homeland Security, or Intelligence community
  • Visit with the SDSU Boren Awards campus representative for more information

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program

  • FULLY FUNDED 7- to 10-week summer language institutes in critical-need foreign languages (14 languages available)
  • Many programs require no previous language study!
  • NO program fee…fully subsidized including airfare, tuition, accommodations and meals
  • Visit with the SDSU CLS campus representative for more information
