Living in the U.S.

On-Campus Housing

The SDSU Office of Housing Administration (OHA) offers on-campus housing for single undergraduate and graduate students. Over 3500 students live on campus each year. Students choose to live on campus for a variety of reasons including convenience, proximity to campus, meeting friends, and fully experiencing the U.S. college tradition.

The demand for on-campus housing usually exceeds the spaces available, so you should apply as early as possible.

Early arrival

Most students move into the residence halls (dorms) the weekend before classes start. However, as a new international student, you may need to move in earlier to ensure that you will have housing during orientation week. To apply for Early Arrival housing, visit the OHA website to download and complete the Early Arrival Request Form.

  • Note: Early Arrival is not available in all residence halls, so contact OHA to make sure your residence hall allows early move-in. (Early Arrival is available to students who are assigned to residence halls that are open over the breaks.)

Live on campus requirement for freshmen

San Diego State University has demonstrated that living on campus can enhance new students’ academic and personal success. Therefore, SDSU requires all first-time freshmen who graduated from high schools outside of the local SDSU area to live on campus their first year. However, SDSU will consider requests for exemption from this requirement.  Learn more about the Freshman Live-On Requirement on the OHA website.

How to apply for on-campus housing

You may apply for on-campus housing once you have been admitted to SDSU and you have received your Red ID number. You can find full details on the Housing application process and housing options on the OHA the website at http://housing.sdsu.edu/housing/apply.aspx.

Your first night in the U.S.

On-Campus housing does not provide pillows, sheets, blankets, and towels. If you plan to arrive in San Diego at night, we recommend staying in a hotel so that you do not need to bother with purchasing these items after your long flight. Find out about local hotel accommodations for early arrivals.
