San Diego State University President Sally Roush welcomed the SDSU community back to campus for the fall 2017 semester. The president spoke at the annual All-University Convocation at the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union. The event celebrates SDSU’s accomplishments and brings together the campus community for an update on the university.

“Recent events in our nation make it clear that now more than ever, there is a need to gather as a community of friends and co-workers to exercise our leadership and to reaffirm our shared values of diversity, inclusion and respect,” said Roush. “As we embark on another year of serving the public through excellence in teaching, scholarship and creative activities, we have the opportunity to demonstrate the benefit of living our shared values every day.”

Looking ahead

President Roush discussed the current state of the university and provided a preview of what’s ahead for the 2017-18 academic year.

“One thing this year will bring is the completion of the final year of our strategic plan, ‘Building on Excellence,’" said Roush. “Its initiatives have led to record-high graduation rates, nationally recognized scholarship, and engaged alumni and friends who donated $105 million just this last year alone to support our students and programs.”

With the help of the strategic plan, the university will advance numerous initiatives. They include the recruitment and support of underrepresented students, as well as moving up the registration timeline in the area of student success; and the completion of the Engineering and Interdisciplinary Sciences Complex in the areas of research and creative endeavors.

Celebrating recent success

The event also gave faculty and staff members an opportunity to review and celebrate a long list of accomplishments made at the university during the previous academic year.

SDSU finished its first ever comprehensive fundraising campaign, raising a total of $815 million; researchers received $134 million in external funding—an increase of nearly 3.5 percent over fiscal year 2015-16; more than 133,000 people attended arts events put on by the university; and SDSU rose to No. 9 in the Open Doors ranking of top institutions for study abroad.

Outstanding faculty and staff

In her speech, the president also recognized the university’s outstanding faculty and staff. Roush recognized the winners of the Zuma Awards for Staff Excellence, who were presented with their awards earlier this month. They are Mohamed Ahmed, Teddi Brock, Thelma Chavez, Marcus Chiu, Pete Coulter, Rick Gulizia, Harry Johnson, Andrea Saltzman Martin, Dave McKinsey and Frank Sweeney.

The president also presented the Monty Awards for outstanding faculty achievements. This year’s honorees are Douglas Fisher, Huma Ghosh, Lawrence Herzog, Martina Musteen, Chris Rasmussen, Satish Sharma and Larry Verity.

In closing, Roush thanked the audience for its dedication to the university and encouraged the SDSU community to move forward in the same spirit.

“The success San Diego State University enjoys today is due to the hard work and efforts of faculty, staff, students and alumni over 12 decades,” Roush said. “If we continue to have the courage to make tough decisions, to hold ourselves accountable, to recognize and value the diversity of ways that each of us contributes, and to demonstrate the creativity needed to find new pathways, then we will persist and persevere on our collective journey of excellence.”
