How to Get Started

Notice: As of September 20, 2016, all IRB submissions will only be accepted through our new submission system at  Additional information about our new system, including how to request an account and submit a new protocol can be found on our Sharepoint support page.

Institutional Review Board

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a faculty led committee which meets monthly to review research involving human subjects in order to ensure that all projects conform to federal and institutional regulations and policies.

Human Research Protection Program Analysts & Staff

The Human Research Protection Program is staffed with one administrative coordinator, and 3 analyst/educators. They are responsible for administrative (expedited and exempt) review of protocols, and handle the majority of protocol analysis and communication with investigators.

They are also responsible for the Program’s comprehensive educational offerings.

Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Human Subjects Research Training is now available to SDSU investigators .  CITI is highly regarded in the research community and is used at most major universities.  CITI provides comprehensive human subjects protection education and training.  The CITI modules have been designed to provide both biomedical and social/behavior researchers with targeted and relevant information.

Access the instructions below for information about which courses to take and how to create or update your CITI account to include your SDSU affiliation.
IRB-CITI Training Requirements

Effective (November 1, 2015
) CITI human subjects research training will
replace the current SDSU tutorial and
be the only accepted training certificate for new and continuing investigator certification.

*Investigators are expected to transition over to CITI training at the time their current human subjects research training certification expires
