This is a good site to visit if you are interested in the complete final wording of a bill that has become a law." 2. Supplemental Educational Services

  • Supplemental Educational Services: NCLB Action Brief on Supplemental Education Services
    The term "supplemental educational services" refers to tutoring and other supplemental academic enrichment services, usually in reading, language arts or math. This extra help can be provided before or after school or on weekends. Children attending schools in their second or third year of "Program Improvement" status, are eligible to receive supplemental services. Schools that are in "Program Improvement" statusare required to cover costs for such services. This link takes you to a document that summarizes a great deal of information including requirements for states departments of education, local school districts, parents, and providers of supplemental services.   • US Department of Education Supplemental Services Guide
    Draft Guidance on Supplemental educational services, which refer to additional academic instruction designed to increase the academic achievement of students in low-performing schools. These services may include academic assistance such as tutoring, remediation and other educational interventions, provided that such approaches are consistent with the content and instruction used by the local educational agency (LEA) and are aligned with the States academic content standards.

4. California Laws Impacting Education

  • California Education Code
    The code establishes the law of this state respecting the subjects to which it relates, and its provisions and all proceedings under it are to be liberally construed, with a view to effect its objects and to promote justice. It is the policy of the State of California to afford all persons in public schools, regardless of their sex, ethnic group identification, race, national origin, religion, mental or physical disability, or regardless of any basis that is contained in the prohibition of hate crimes set forth in subdivision (a) of Section 422.6 of the Penal Code, equal rights and opportunities in the educational institutions of the state.
  • Migrant Child Care and Development Programs - EC Section 8230-8233
    The Superintendent of Public Instruction shall administer all migrant child care and development programs. In addition, the Superintendent of Public Instruction shall support and encourage the state-level coordination of all agencies that offer services to migrant children and their families and state-level coordination of existing health funds for migrants.
  • Child Care for Recipients of the CalWORKs Program-EC Section 8350-8359.1
    It is the intent of the Legislature in enacting this article to ensure that recipients of aid under Chapter 2 (commencing with Section 11200) of Part 3 of Division 9 of the Welfare and Institutions Code, or any successor program, and former recipients who have left aid for employment, are connected as soon as possible to local child care resources, make stable child care arrangements, and continue to receive subsidized child care services after they no longer receive aid as long as they require those services and meet the eligibility requirements set forth in Sections 8263 and 8263.1.

  • California Department of Education - Testing and Accountability
    This link will take you to the California: Testing and Accountability main page which will, in turn, lead you to these additional sites:
    • Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) - Administration of the STAR program. Test results are used for student and school accountability purposes.
    • Academic Performance Index (API) - Measures the academic performance and growth of schools on a variety of academic measures.
    • Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) - Requires each state to ensure that all schools and districts make Adequate Yearly Progress based on assessments included in the statewide accountability system.
    • California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) - Beginning with the Class of 2006, all public school students will be required to pass the exam to earn a high school diploma
