Nola Butler Byrd, Ph.D.

Nola Butler Byrd, Ph.D. earned a BA in Theatre with a minor in English at Wesleyan University, an MA in Education with a concentration in Counseling at San Diego State University in the Community-Based Block Program, and a doctorate in Education, with a concentration in multiculturalism and social justice from the Claremont Graduate University and San Diego State University Joint Doctoral Program. Dr. Butler-Byrd is a scholar/activist and Associate Professor and Director of the Community-Based Block Program. Prior to joining the academy, she worked for many years in the nonprofit section with several social justice organizations, including the National Conference for Community and Justice (formerly the National Conference for Christians and Jews) and Planned Parenthood of San Diego and Riverside Counties. Her research interests include: experiential multicultural counseling and community practice for social justice, indigenous healing and world view, somatic body work, multicultural identity development, and multi-ethnic faculty retention.
