Liza Bolanos, M.S.


Liza received her BA in Sociology and Chicano and Latin American Studies at Fresno state and her Masters in Counselling at SDSU. Liza has a long standing services and commitment to public mental health and currently works for San Diego Unified School District’s New Dawn Day Rehabilitation program.

Research & Teaching Interests:

Postmodern theory; social justice; building and supporting a culturally and linguistically competent mental health workforce; and providing organizational support to service providers towards adoption and integration of collaborative and strength based practices.

Professional Activities:

AAMFT California Advocacy Committee, member, 2011-2014


  • Advocated for passage of Senate Bill 1172 effectively banning conversion therapy by a mental health provider to those under 18.
  • Worked towards diminishing barriers to licensure by supporting increased staffing at Board of Behavioral Services which served to lower processing times in half. 
  • Led efforts to make public mental health workplace issues a priority in 2015.
