Admissions Requirements and How to Apply

How to Apply

  1. Cal State Apply University Application: Complete the University application at

    Are you having trouble with the Cal State Apply application?  If so email right away for assistance.

  2. Submit official transcript(s) and test scores: Take the GRE exam and request official transcript(s) and GRE scores to be sent to SDSU Graduate Admissions:

    Electronic Transcript Formats
    SDSU accepts electronic transcripts in PDF or EDI format.  

    Transcripts must be sent by the Institution
    When requesting an electronic transcript you can choose San Diego State University on the selection menu or have them sent to:  SDSU will not accept transcripts emailed from students.

    If you attended SDSU as an undergraduate student, then we do NOT require official transcripts from SDSU.  We have access to this information.

Items Requested in Program Application

Please gather the items below and have them ready to upload.

  1. Statement of Leadership Philosophy: Write a Statement of Leadership Philosophy, 1-2 pages, addressing your beliefs and values about leadership, curriculum and instruction, students, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders.

  2. Resume/CV: Prepare a resume or curriculum Vitae to your application, which will include your education and employment history as well as any academic honors, awards, scholarships, and publications.

  3. Letter of Recommendation: Contact two individuals who you have interacted with both academically and/or professionally and would be able to write a letter of recommendation for you.  One of the recommenders must be an immediate supervisor.  Recommenders will submit their recommendations directly into the Online Program application.

Also Required if Seeking Credential Option:
  1. Credential: Hold a valid California Clear credential.
  2. Verification of passing CBEST scores.  If you do not have a copy of your original CBEST test results, you will need to request them using this form.
  3. Verification of Experience: A minimum of five years of successful, full-time experience in a public school, nonpublic school, or private school of equivalent status located in California or another state, or a combination of experience earned in California and another state. This experience may be teaching, pupil personnel work, librarianship, health services, clinical or rehabilitative services, or a combination of teaching and school services. Substitute teaching does not apply. Verification of experience must be on the district or employing agency letterhead and signed by the superintendent, assistant superintendent, director of personnel, or director of human resources. School or district personnel other than the applicant must verify all experience.  To earn the credential you must have a full 5 years of teaching experience at the time you finish the program. Verification of Experience Template
