Admissions Requirements and How to Apply

How to Apply

  1. CSUMentor University Application: Complete the CSU Mentor application at

     Please make the following Major/Program objective selection in CSU Mentor:

    Education: Educl Leadership (PreK-12) (MA) - EXTERNAL DEGREE

    Note - When applying to the program, please select the Fall term even though the program begins in May

  2. Submit official transcript(s) and test scores: Take the GRE exam and request official transcript(s) and GRE scores to be sent to SDSU Graduate Admissions:

    Electronic Transcript Formats
    SDSU accepts electronic transcripts in PDF or EDI format.  

    Transcripts must be sent by the Institution
    When requesting an electronic transcript you can choose San Diego State University on the selection menu or have them sent to:  SDSU will not accept transcripts emailed from students.

Items Requested in Program Application

Please gather the items below and have them ready to upload to Decision Desk.

  1. Resume/CV: Prepare a resume or curriculum Vitae to your application, which will include your education and employment history as well as any academic honors, awards, scholarships, and publications.

  2. Letters of Recommendation: Contact two individuals who you have interacted with both academically and/or professionally and would be able to write a letter of recommendation for you.  One of the recommenders must be an immediate supervisor.  Recommenders will submit their recommendations directly into the Online Program application.

  3. Philosophy Statement VideoPhilosophy Statment Video Instructions.

Also Required if Seeking Credential Option:
  1. Credential: Hold a valid California Clear credential.
  2. Verification of passing CBEST scores.
  3. Verification of Experience: A minimum of three years of successful, full-time experience in a public school, nonpublic school, or private school of equivalent status located in California or another state, or a combination of experience earned in California and another state. This experience may be teaching, pupil personnel work, librarianship, health services, clinical or rehabilitative services, or a combination of teaching and school services. Substitute teaching does not apply. Verification of experience must be on the district or employing agency letterhead and signed by the superintendent, assistant superintendent, director of personnel, or director of human resources. School or district personnel other than the applicant must verify all experience.  To earn the credential you must have a full 5 years of teaching experience at the time you finish the program. Verification of Experience Template
