Counseling (M.A.) with Mental Health Recovery & Trauma Care (Certificate)

How to Apply

  1. Cal State Apply University Application: Complete the University application at www.calstate.edu/apply  Do NOT submit a personal statement or letters of recommendation through this system.

    Unless you are solely applying to the certificate program, please apply to the MA Education (Counseling) program. You will be enrolled in the certificate program upon admittance to the MA program. This program does not require any additional work or accrue additional costs during your course of study as it is an embedded program.

    If you are applying for the Certificate alone, then choose the Certificate as your Major/Program objective in Cal State Apply.


  2. Submit official transcript(s) and test scores: Take the GRE exam and request official transcript(s) to be sent to SDSU Graduate Admissions:

    Electronic Transcript Formats
    SDSU accepts electronic transcripts in PDF or EDI format.  

    Transcripts must be sent by the Institution
    When requesting an electronic transcript you can choose San Diego State University on the selection menu or have them sent to: TranscriptsForSDSU@sdsu.edu.  SDSU will not accept transcripts emailed from students.

  3. Decision Desk Program Application: The link to this program application will be available within the Cal State Apply application, but you can also access it here: Online Program Application for SDSU Graduate Programs using Decision Desk.

Items Requested in Program Application

Please gather the items below and have them ready to upload to Decision Desk.

  1. Personal Statement: Write a 2-3 page personal statement based on the following prompt:

    What attracts you to the SDSU program compared to other training programs? What attracts you to the SDSU program compared to other training programs?

    What personal life experiences have been very important to you in helping you prepare to be a mental health professional, counselor, or marriage and family therapist?

    What unique multicultural experiences have you experienced in your life that have been meaningful to you in preparing to work as a mental health practitioner, counselor or marriage and family therapist?

    What specific events that stand out in your schooling or working life that are important stepping stones for you in training to be a mental health practitioner, counselor or marriage and family therapist?

  2. Experience Profile: Complete your experience profile using the Experience Profile Template (Word Document).

  3. Language Background Form: Complete the Language Background Form.

  4. Unofficial transcript: Download unofficial transcripts (or scan a paper transcript) for every institution, one file per institution, and be prepared to upload to the online program application.  This is in addition to, not a substitution for, having official transcripts sent to SDSU Graduate Admissions office.

  5. Letter of Recommendation: Contact three individuals who you have interacted with both personally and professionally and would be able to write a letter of recommendation for you. Please request that they write their letter and have it ready for when the system is available since they will be needed quickly. Recommenders will submit their letters directly into the Online Program Application in Decision Desk; not through CSU Mentor.

  6. Video:  Make a 5-6-minute video on your phone or some other video recording device and upload it with the other online program application materials in Decision Desk.

Questions for the Video:
    • Tell us what you are most passionate about in becoming a mental health professional, counselor or marriage and family therapist.
    • What do you most want to learn in your choice of program?
    • What do you imagine at this time will be your contribution to  working with others to provide them with helpful mental health services?
