How to Apply

  1. Cal State Apply University Application: Complete the University application at www.calstate.edu/apply

    Are you having trouble with the Cal State Apply application?  If so email grad-cfd@sdsu.edu right away for assistance.


  2. Submit official transcript(s) and test scores: Take the GRE exam and request official transcript(s) to be sent to SDSU Graduate Admissions:

    Electronic Transcript Formats
    SDSU accepts electronic transcripts in PDF or EDI format.  

    Transcripts must be sent by the Institution
    When requesting an electronic transcript you can choose San Diego State University on the selection menu or have them sent to: TranscriptsForSDSU@sdsu.edu.  SDSU will not accept transcripts emailed from students.

    If you attended SDSU as an undergraduate student, then we do NOT require official transcripts from SDSU.  We have access to this information.


  3. Program Application: The link to this program application will be available within the Cal State Apply application, but you can also access it here: Online Program Application for SDSU Graduate Programs 
Due to circumstances beyond our control, SDSU will be switching to a different program application.  
The new link is expected to be available by the week of October 30, 2017.

Items Requested in Program Application

Please gather the items below and have them ready to upload to the Program application:

  1. Resume/CV: Prepare a resume using these guidelines.
  2. Language Background:  Please complete this Language Background Form.
  3. Prerequisite Coursework: Complete the Prerequisite Coursework form.
  4. Academic Writing Sample:  Please provide one example of your academic writing.  Research or literature review papers are preferred.  This requirement applies to all applicants.
  5. Letter of Recommendation: Contact three individuals who you have interacted with professionally and academically who will be able to provide a strong letter of recommendation on your behalf. Recommenders will submit their letters directly into the Online Program application.  You can send the requests through the  Program application.
  6. Personal Statement: In a two page, double-spaced essay, please explain the following:
    • Background: Describe what in your life has influenced your decision to pursue an LPCC program in early childhood and mental health.
    • Career Perception and Goals: What type of role and/or settings do you see yourself working in professionally after you become an LPCC?  Please be as specific as possible regarding the settings and function of your desired future role.
    • Strengths and Areas to Improve: Describe yourself candidly in terms of your strengths and areas to improve regarding emotional, social, and intellectual activities.
