Valid ID Required

red arrowDue to stringent security measures, all students participating in commencement are required to present their SDSU RedID card or a valid, government-issued picture ID in order to be admitted to Viejas Arena.

Students who do not bring valid ID to Viejas Arena will not be allowed to participate in commencement.

Viejas Arena Assembly

Please check the schedule of commencement ceremonies for the appropriate date and time.

  • Assemble in L Lot, across from Parking Structure 4, north of the arena.
  • Arrive at least 45 minutes before the processional start time, unless otherwise noted for your college. See Ceremonies by College.

At your assembly area, faculty marshals and student ushers will organize the processional lines. Candidates line up behind the signs designating their departments.

Commencement Card Forms

red arrowWhile waiting in line at Viejas Arena you will fill out a card asking for your name, degree and address. College representatives will use these cards to announce your name as you walk across the stage. In addition, commencement photographers will send photo proofs to the e-mail and mailing address listed on your card. Please note, the College of Arts and Letters does not read individual names during its ceremony; therefore, individual photos will not be taken.

The processional is led by the grand marshal carrying the college banner and directed by faculty marshals.

It will enter the commencement site from one or two directions, providing a colorful view of candidates and faculty in their full academic regalia.

After arriving at your seat, please remain standing until the grand marshal signals you to sit.

Following closing remarks by the dean, the grand marshal will lead the recessional of graduates and dignitaries from the commencement site back to the assembly area.

In case of rain during commencement, candidates should arrive to L Lot, across from Parking Structure 4, at least 45 minutes before the processional start time, unless otherwise noted for your college. See Ceremonies by College.

Once candidates enter through security and show their RedID, they will proceed directly inside Viejas Arena where they will be seated according to their department.

Please note candidates will be unable to bring umbrellas inside the arena due to the limited mobility on the arena floor and potential tripping hazard. However, there will be bins located at the entrance to store umbrellas during the ceremony.

All guests will be allowed to bring umbrellas into the arena, but they cannot be the bigger beach or golf umbrella size.

Please help make commencement a pleasant experience by respecting other participants and guests.

Remain in your seat for the entire ceremony. Candidates and guests are encouraged not to exit the arena until the entire ceremony has concluded.

Prohibited items include:

  • Signs larger than 11"x17"
  • Fireworks
  • Bottles and cans
  • Beach balls and balloons
